1740- My fourth great granduncle, William Drury, has been born to John Drury & Susannah Hayden in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

My fourth great granduncle, Joseph Newton, is born to Clement & Elizabeth Newton in St. Mary's County, Maryland.

My fourth great granduncle, Arnold Livers, son of Arnold & Helen, is assigned to St. Francis Xavier in Newtown, St. Mary's County, where he received his final vows in 1742. Arnold was a Jesuit Priest.



My fifth great grandaunt, Elizabeth Robey, dies at the age of 50, in Charles County, Maryland. The daughter of John Robey & Sarah Hines Luckett, she was the wife of John Henley. Her husband apparently died the same year.

William Robey and Mary Alexander are married in Charles County, Maryland.

William Luckett and Charity Middleton, the daughter of Captain John Middleton & Mary Wheeler, are married in Prince George's County, Maryland. They settled in what would become the new county of Frederick on the western slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Charity and her husband were given by her parents, "for natural love and affection", the tracts "Thomas and Mary" and "Wilson's Enlargement", containing 195 acres in Prince Georges County.
In about 1725, as an orphan, William Luckett had been placed under the care of James Middleton, uncle of Charity Middleton, by court orders to learn a profitable trade or profession. It was the custom of that day in Maryland to apprentice children whose paternal parent was deceased and whose estate was either insolvent or negligible with planters or merchants in order that the orphans may not become public charges.
In 1728, James Middleton was summoned by the court and censured for "neglecting to teach William Luckett to read and write". William, however, later became quite proficient in letters, because many documents written by him and signed are still preserved at the court house of Frederick County.

December 26, 1739- The following documents are filed concerning my sixth great granduncle, John Hanson. He had inherited land from his father, and acquired yet more for his business of growing corn and tobacco. He also held slaves.

Prince George's Land Records 1739-1743 - Liber Y - Land Commission. From Lord Baltimore To Messrs John Hawkins Sr, John Hawkins Jr, John Lowe Sr, and John Lowe Jr of PG, Gentlemen, Greeting. Whereas John Hanson of Charles County, Gentleman, seized of a parcel of land in PG called Clarksons Purchase, did, on the 4th Tuesday of last Nov, prefer his petition in writing to PG County Court held at Upper Marlborough Town, before Peter Dent, Gent, and his associates for Commission to examine witnesses to prove and perpetuate the memory of the bounds of sd parcel of land, know that we have given you (not being anyway related to the petitioner or any contiguous proprietor, nor interested in sd land) power to examine all witnesses which shall be nominated to you by the afd petitioner or other person concerned, touching their knowledge of the bounds of the land afd or the bounds of any other lands whereon and whereto the afd land depends or relates, and therefore we command you to call before you, on a day you specify, on the land afd, all witnesses. Signed Dec 26, 1739 - A Contee, Cl Cur. Feb 9, 1739/40. Messrs John Hawkins Sr, John Lowe Sr, John Hawkins Jr, John Lowe Jr, qualified themselves to execute the Commission before - Tho Owen.

On last Mar 18, we repaired to the sd tract of land, being at the mouth of Clast Cr, and took the following depositions:

Thomas Stonestreet, age about 57, says that about 18 years ago, this deponent was at the afd place with Colo Addison & several others and the sd Addison declared the beginning tree of Clarkson Purchase stood within a few yards of the sd place where now stands a locust post but something near the water.

On last Jul 16, we again repaired to the sd tract of land at a bounded white oak near Mr. Digges' Road that leads to Broad Cr near Clast Cr. We took the following depositions:

Robert Clark, age about 50 declares that 30 years ago, Capt. Geo: Athey came to the afd bounded white oak with this deponent and told him it was the 2nd bound tree of Clarksons Purchase. A true return. Signed Nov 24, 1740 - John Hawkins, Jno Hawkins Jr.

John Hanson, Jr. is my sixth great granduncle. He is the son of John Hanson, Sr. & Elizabeth Hussey.
Elizabeth Hussey is my seventh great grandmother, the widow of my seventh great grandfather, Samuel Luckett. The marriage is her third, and she is quite a bit older than her spouse. 
Elizabeth Hussey is the daughter of Thomas Hussey, Gentleman, and his wife, Joanna Porter, who were of the Roman Catholic faith. The 'Gentleman' indicates that he is descended from English gentry. Documents bearing his signature indicate that he was educated in letters, an accomplishment not too common among early settlers. Thomas became one of the interesting characters of the early days and once wrote to Lord Baltimore that he had been robbed by the Indians "of alle but the clothes on my bodye".
Following Samuel Luckett's death, Elizabeth lost little time acquiring a third husband, and by November 6, 1705, she had married John Hanson. On that date, John Hanson and Elizabeth, and Samuel Luckett, her son, 'executors of Samuel Luckett, deceased...' rendered an account to the Prerogative Court of Charles County:
"At the fall session of the County Court the Grand Jury with John Beale as foreman, indicted Nicholas Gulick, a Romanist priest, for "marrying John Hanson and the widow Luckett contrary to law." Likewise, John Hanson and Elizabeth, his wife, were indicted "for being & Suffering the ___ to marry."'
There are no known descendants of Elizabeth Hussey and John Gardiner who was a staunch Roman Catholic; Samuel Luckett, her second husband subscribed to the Church of England; and the third, John Hanson, was also of the Church of England. There were four children from this third marriage and all four of these children were reared within the Catholic Church."
These were difficult religious times dating back over 150 years to the reign of Henry VIII.  Her parents were Catholic, her first husband was Catholic, she was married to her third husband by a Catholic priest, and she reared the children from her first husband as Catholics. The only period she appears to follow the Church of England is during her marriage to Samuel Luckett. It is probably no coincidence that Thomas Hussey Luckett, a Catholic, was the only son of Samuel and Elizabeth's children to be named in the will of Elizabeth's father.

March 29, 1735- My sixth great granduncle, Ignatius Luckett, dies at the age of 46 in Charles County, Maryland.
Ignatius was born at the head of Port Tobacco Creek in 1689 to Samuel Luckett & Elizabeth Hussey.
In 1706, Samuel died and young Ignatius inherited the 100 acre tract known as "The Square Adventure", on the northwest branch of Zachia swamp. In 1714, he acquired another parcel of land called "Moore's Ditch" on the west side of Zachia Swamp; adjoining the land of George and Robert Goodrich.
Ignatius, a member of the Church of England, was a planter, slave owner, and grew tobacco.
He married Jane Hanson, and had many children. Jane survived him, dying in 1775, when she was 81.
In 1731, he paid Thomas Morris of Charles County 3000 pounds of tobacco for a portion of "Small Hopes", about 100 acres lying on the west side of the Wicomico River. And in 1732, he patented "Luckett's Level".

My eighth great grandmother, Elizabeth Meekin, widow of James French, dies at Newtown, St. Mary's County, Maryland.
About 1670, Elizabeth brought 129 Acres of "Wolver Hampton," which Bordered on "Hopton Park" to her marriage to James French. This land had been in possession of Elizabeth's father, William Meekin. Elizabeth had been named in her grandfather Beard's will as an heir in lieu of his grandsons William and Robert Meekin.
Elizabeth witnessed her husband's will on March 17, 1733, so her death came later that same year. Elizabeth Meekin French was a Catholic.

My fifth great granduncle, Anthony Drane, dies at the age of 40 in Maryland.
