My sixth great grandfather, John Robey, dies at the age of 76 in Charles County, Maryland. John Robey was born in 1648 at Castle Donington in Leichestershire, England. In 1684, he married Sarah Hines Luckett in Charles County, Maryland. They had thirteen children, including Stacey Robey who would marry John Worland II.

My sixth great grandparents, John Drury and wife Mary Ford, die in St. Mary's County, Maryland. John Drury was born in England in 1669. Mary was born in St. Mary's county in 1678, where they wed in 1697.

Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland

June 15, 1723-  Raphael Neale, Gentleman, and Mary his wife conveyed on 15 Jun 1723 part of a tract "St. Matthews", on the west side of the main fresh of Portabbaco or St. Thomas Creek, 200 acres to Edward Clement, planter . (Land: L#2.99)

1712 Maryland

1712- Thomas Robey is born to John Robey & Sarah Smallwood in Port Tobacco, Charles County, Maryland.

On our recent trip to Southern Maryland, we came across this old barn across from the old one-room schoolhouse in Port Tobacco. This is on a corner directly below the historic plantation Rose Hill. Charlie and I had pulled over looking for Port Tobacco. We couldn't find it. A woman visiting the schoolhouse informed us, "This is Port Tobacco."

St. Ignatius Church, Chapel Point 1641

The oldest active parish in the nation with a continual pastorate, St. Ignatius sits beautifully on a 120-foot bluff above the Potomac River near Port Tobacco, Maryland. St. Ignatius was founded in 1641 by the Reverend Andrew White who accompanied Catholic settlers to Maryland on the Ark and the Dove.

The oldest surviving marker is the burial site of Elizabeth Darnall who died in 1705.

A resident priest explained the lack of older markers. In the 17th century, most of the burials were closer to the river, and mostly of wood.

During the Civil War, soldiers on the Virginia side of the Potomac fired cannon at the stone headstones, destroying them.

In 1866, much of the interior of the church was destroyed by a fire, and records were lost. However, later headstones of Robey, Digges, Neale, Mudd, etc. show that many Charles County colonists were interred here.

1734 Maryland

1734- William Elder, a Catholic, emigrates from St. Mary's County, Maryland, to Frederick County, Maryland. He is the first white man to settle in the Emmitsburg district. William and his wife Ann first settle near Payne's Hill, between what later would become Mount St. Mary's and Thurmont. He is soon joined by his friend Arnold Livers.
He gives the name "St. Mary's Mount" to a portion of Carrick's Knob. He locates at the foot of Blue Ridge Mountains, the home of Indians and wild beasts.
He calls his place "Pleasant Level." While building his house, He reserves one room to serve as a chapel for religious services. This room is equal in size to all the rest of his house.

1734- Benjamin Stimton, planter, Prince George County, 23rd Sept., 1734; 11th Nov,1734,
To wife [unnamed] and child, [unnamed], entire personal estate, divided equally.
To son Benjamin and heirs, 50 Acre dwelling plantation, "Solomon Purchase." Should any of children die during minority, survivors to divide portion of deceased.

December 10, 1734- John Drury marries Susannah Hayden in St. Mary's, Maryland.

I, Sarah Roby of Charles County, widow, for the natural love I have for my son, Peter Roby of Charles County, planter, I have given him 1 feather bed and furniture, 1 wooden cupboard, 1 wooden table, 1 iron pot, and all other my personal estate which is now in my possession. Signed Nov 30, 1734 - Sarah (H her mark) Roby. Witnesses - Henry Hawkins, Samuel Hawkins

1734- Thomas Luckett dies in Charles County, Maryland.
Thomas Luckett died intestate, and in accordance with the customs of the times, letters of administration were issued to his widow Sarah Luckett. On August 14, 1734, William Middleton and William Hagan exhibited bond in court. His brothers, Ignatius Luckett and Thomas Hussey Luckett, as the kinsmen, certified on December 3, 1734, to the inventory appraised at L104/5/9, by James Middleton. By 1737 his widow had married William Semmes. ("The Lucketts of Portobacco" by Harry Wright Newman, 1938.)
