The Worland Family in America and Beyond

I began my life in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, on an island filled with forests and wild rhododendrons. I was separated from my Worland family there at an early age. Recently, I was reunited with my family and learned of my heritage. And so, this journey to know my ancestors began. The Worlands, Gideons, Newtons, Conards... they were the colonists, the settlers, the pioneers. They fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War. This is their story, and the story of a nation. -Deci Worland MacKinnon

April 1730, Maryland

Wollaston Manor

April 16, 1730- James Neale, son of James Neale & Elizabeth Lord, dies at the age of 41 at "Wollaston Manor", in Charles County, Maryland.

James Neale, a Catholic, lived at "Wollaston Manor", on 1000 acres located near the confluence of St. James Creek and St. Raphael Creek in Charles County. He had inherited this part of the manor from his father, Captain James Neale.
Wollaston Manor was made up of 2,000 acres patented in 1642 to Captain James Neale and was named for his Grandfather's home in Northamptonshire, England. Neale's wife, Anne Gill, was Lady-in-waiting to the wife of Charles I, Queen Henrietta Maria.

The following  description is taken from THE DAVID RANKIN BARBEE PAPERS:
"If one had the privilege of choosing the spot where he wished to be born, he could find none more attractive than Wolleston Manor. Long ago the old manor house was destroyed by fire, and not a vestige of it remains to tell its story.
The site where once it reared its lofty walls still exists -a small plain fronting the majestic Potomac for a mile or more, and presenting a vista of such rare natural beauty and splendor as to have no compeer on either side of that noble stream. Standing on the spot where the manor was erected in the early days of the Seventeenth Century, to the left, as one looks out on the river, lies a grove of primeval oaks..."

The Potomac River, Charles County, Maryland

Young James married first Elizabeth Hagan Clarkson, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Hagan, and the widow of William Clarkson, with five small children. Their daughter, Elizabeth Neale, was still a minor when her father died, and was bequeathed her mother's inherited Hagan land.
He married secondly Jane Boarman, the daughter of William Boarman and Mary Pile. The manor was left to the daughters of this union.

December 30, 1729- My eighth great grandfather, Thones Kunders, dies in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In English, he was also known as Dennis Conrad.
Thones Kunders was born in Germany to Coentgen Lenssen Coenis & Anna Entgen Thones. At age 20, he was baptized into the Mennonite faith. He was a blue dyer by trade. He married Ellin Magdalena Tyson in Germany, and together they sailed aboard the "Concord" in 1683 to William Penn's new land in Pennsylvania, escaping persecution in Germany..There, they became members of the Society of Friends, the first meeting being held at their home in Germantown.
In 1688, Thones Kunders and the little band of Friends at Germantown, raised their voices in opposition to the institution of slavery, it being the first recorded protest against slavery in America.
He continued to live at Germantown the remainder of his life, in all a period of seventy-six years. His wife Ellin had died earlier the same year.
His daughter, Agnes Cunraeds, wife of Samuel Powell, died about the same time, perhaps on the same day.

Robert Proud, in his History of Pennsylvania says, "Among the first Germantown settlers was Dennis Conrad. The first religious meeting of the Quakers, in that place, was held at his house in 1683. He was an hospitable, well-disposed man, of an inoffensive life and good character. He died in the year 1729."

September 1729, Pennsylvania

Monument to Original Settlers of Germantown

September 1729- My eighth great grandmother, Elin Theisson, wife of Thones Kunders, dies in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Elin was born in Kirchen, Altenkirchen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany to Mathias Dohrs (Theiss)  & Agnes Neesgen Op den Graeff. Her name in German was Lyntgen.
In 1670, she was baptized in the Mennonite Church in Goch. She came to this church while she was employed as a maidservant to a Mennonite family. In 1677, she married fellow Mennonite Thones Kunders, a linen weaver and blue dyer from Krefeld. (Portrait of Thones Kunders at left.)
Thones and Elin, with their three young sons, were among the first 13 German families to come to America aboard the "Concord"   in 1683 and establish Germantown, Pennsylvania. The colonists had been preceded by Francis Daniel Pastorius, who had been charged with the duty of finding home lands for them within the province lately granted by the English sovereign to William Penn. After a voyage of seventy-four days the "Concord," five hundred tons burthen, William Jeffries, master, landed at Philadelphia, October 6, 1683. The passengers were all Quakers and Mennonites, escaping persecution in Germany.
They initially sought shelter in caves along the banks of the Delaware River.
The first Friends meeting in Germantown was held in the house of Thones & Elin Kunders, and likely was continued there until the first meeting-house was built in 1686.  It was in this house that the first Anti-Slavery document in America was written in 1688.  It proved too controversial for even the Quakers to approve at their monthly and yearly meetings.
The site of the house is a national historic site today.
