I began my life in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, on an island filled with forests and wild rhododendrons. I was separated from my Worland family there at an early age. Recently, I was reunited with my family and learned of my heritage. And so, this journey to know my ancestors began. The Worlands, Gideons, Newtons, Conards... they were the colonists, the settlers, the pioneers. They fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War. January 10, 1683- A son, Samuel, is born to William Abernathy & Sarah Doolittle in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut.

January 10, 1696- My ninth great granduncle, Samuel Peck, dies at the age of 49 in West Hartford, Hartford, Connecticut, British America.
The son of Deacon Paul Peck & Martha Hale, Samuel was born in Hartford. In 1672, he married Elizabeth Gilpin.

January 10, 1700- A daughter, Elizabeth, is born to John Stowe & Bathsheba Howe in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.

January 10, 1701- A daughter, Phebe, is born to Ebenezer Cole & Mehitable Luther in Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay, British America.

January 10, 1702- A son, Francis, is born to Francis Whitmore & Mary Cornwall in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.

January 10, 1703- A daughter, Hepzibah, is born to Robert Hubbard & Abigail Adkins in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.

January 10, 1704- A son, Ebenezer, is born to Samuel Salisbury & Jemima Martin in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay, British America.

January 10, 1713- A daughter, Elizabeth, is born to Samuel Abernathy & Elizabeth Peck in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut, British America.

August 1742, Connecticut

August 2, 1742- A daughter, Mary, is born to Jacob Whitmore & Rebecca Hurlbut in Middletown, Connecticut.

August 8, 1742- Robert, infant son of Robert Hubbard & Elizabeth Sill, dies in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut. He is five months old. He is buried in Mcdonough Cemetery.

Religious affairs formed one of the most important problems in the life of Connecticut. The established ecclesiastical system was the Congregational. The Code of 1650 (Connecticut) taxed all persons for its support, provided for the collection of church taxes, if necessary, by civil distraint, and forbade the formation of new churches without the consent of the general court. The New England Half Way Covenant of 1657, which extended church membership so as to include all baptized persons, was sanctioned by the general court in 1664.
The custom by which neighbouring churches sought mutual aid and advice, prepared the way for the Presbyterian system of church government, which was established by an ecclesiastical assembly held at Saybrook in 1708, the church constitution there framed being known as the “Saybrook Platform.” At that time, however, a liberal policy towards dissent was adopted, the general court granting permission for churches “soberly to differ or dissent” from the establishment. Hence a large number of new churches soon sprang into being. In 1727 the Church of England was permitted to organize in the colony, and in 1729 a similar privilege was granted to the Baptists and Quakers.
A religious revival swept the colony in 1741. The very existence of the establishment seemed threatened; consequently in 1742 the general court forbade any ordained minister to enter another parish than his own without an invitation, and decided that only those were legal ministers who were recognized as such by the general court. Throughout the remaining years of the 18th century there was constant friction between the establishment and the nonconforming churches. 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica

December 5, 1739- Chloe Moss is born to David Moss & Mindwell Doolittle in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut.

December 9, 1739- Mary Abernathy is born to Caleb Abernathy & Lois Gaylord in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut.

December 10, 1739- Twins, Grace and Patience Parker, are born to Andrew Parker & Susanna Blakeslee in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut. They do not survive, dying within days of their birth.

December 14, 1739- Sarah Stow is born to Eliakim Stow & Lydia Miller in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.

December 15, 1739- Elizabeth Bacon is born to Jeremiah Bacon & Elizabeth Cornwall in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut.

December 24, 1739- Hannah Cotton is born to Ebenezer Cotton & Hannah Cornwall in Middletown, Middlesex County, Connecticut. Her mother, Hannah, would die a week later, at age 24, on December 31, 1739.

It is his second marriage. His first wife, Susannah Moss, had died earlier in the year.

She was the daughter of John Whitmore & Abigail Warner. Her mother died when she was about eight weeks old. His father soon married her stepmother, Mary Savage.

April 12, 1738- Michael Doolittle is born to Daniel Doolittle & Elizabeth Dayton in New Haven, Connecticut.

April 23, 1735- Abigail Adkins, wife of Robert Hubbard, dies at the age of 58 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.
The daughter of Josiah Adkins & Elizabeth Whitmore, she was born in 1676.

On her tombstone in Riverside Cemetery, Middletown, is the inscription:
Pious, Kind, & Good, Lov'd by all Near,
Usefull on Earth, to Heaven dear,
Was she whose dust Lyes buried here

October 1734, Massachusetts

October 5, 1734- Margaret Wetmore (also known as Margaret Whitmore) dies at the age of 66 in Woburn, Middlesex, Massachusetts.
She was born 1668 to Francis Whitmore & Margaret Harty. Margaret married Thomas Carter, a husbandman who was given considerable lands by his father, in 1682. Thomas survived her and would go on to live until the ripe old age of 99.

(Margaret Wetmore is my first cousin 10 times removed. Our common ancestor is John Whitmore.
John Whitmore was killed by an Indian in 1648. This act was not an act of private hatred, but seems to have been the deed of the whole tribe, and the colony was moved to unite with that of New Hampshire in a just revenge. Colonial Records of Connecticut and Trumbull's Colonial Recollections: 'This courte, taking into serious consideration what may be done according to God in way of revenge of the bloude of John Whitmore, late of Stamford, and well weighing all circumstances, together with the carriages of the Indians (bordering thereuppon) in and about the premises: doe declare themselves that they do judge it lawful and according to God to make a war uppon them.' A committee was sent to New Haven the next day to confer with the rest of the magistrates, and 'return with what convenient speed they may.' Trumballs Col. Rec. Vol.1, pg. 197 )

December 1732, Connecticut

December 3, 1732- Eliakim Stow marries Lydia Miller (daughter of Benjamin Miller) in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.
Benjamin Miller was the son of Thomas Miller, who came from Birmingham, England, and was one of the first settlers of Matabeset, now Middletown, Connecticut. Benjamin Miller was the first settler in Cochinby, now Middlefield, Connecticut; he was called "Governor" from some old Indian custom.
Eliakim Stow owned the land from a point east of what is now known as Lee's Mill, west to the top of the mountain. He had a sawmill, and later a mill for carding wool.
Eliakim Stow and Lydia (Miller) Stow lived in Middlefield, where he built a house on a hill above the brook Besek, near the present Baileyville. When he selected the site for the house it was on such a steep hillside that his father-in-law, Benjamin Miller, refused to come to the raising, there being a beautiful level building spot higher up the hill and further south, which Benjamin Miller preferred, but Eliakim Stow would not occupy.

April 6, 1732- My eighth great grandmother, Mary Earle (wife of Nathaniel Hubbard), dies at the age of 67 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.
She lies buried in at Riverside Cemetary in Middletown. Below is the inscription:

Here lies the Body of Mary, the wife of Mr. Nathaniel Hubbard, sen'r,
who departed this life April 6, 1732, in the 69 year of her Age.

April 20, 1732- Joseph Bacon marries my seventh great grandaunt, Bethia Whitmore, in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.

April 26, 1732- Josiah Loomis and Abigail Bacon are married in Simsbury, Hartford, Connecticut.

(Abigail Bacon is my first cousin 9 times removed. Bethia Whitmore is her first cousin. Our common ancestor is Deacon Thomas Whitmore.)

Grave of Mehitable Whitmore Bacon

January 11, 1732- Samuel Doolittle, newborn son of Thomas Doolittle & Sarah Abernathy, dies in Wallingford, New Haven, Connecticut.

January 17, 1732- My eighth great grandaunt, Mehitable Whitmore (widow of Andrew Bacon), dies at the age of 62 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut. She lies buried in Riverside Cemetary in Middletown. Her tombstone reads:
"Here Lyeth the body of Mehetable Bacon Relict of Andrew Bacon who died Jan 17th 173 1/2 in y 63 year of her age"

December 1724, Connecticut

December 8, 1724- John Blake dies at the age of 41 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut.
John Blake was born in 1683 at Middletown. He was a farmer. In 1705, he married Elizabeth Johnson. The marriage produced six children
The inventory of John Blake's property was taken January 19, 1725, by Jonathan Blake, Stephen Blake and William Whittmore. The administration was granted to his widow Elizabeth on Feb 2, 1725.
On January 8, 1729, Joseph Blake, John and Elizabeth's 16 year-old son, chose Captain Daniel Hall to be his guardian.On May 4, 1736, following the death of Elizabeth, their minor son, Freelove Blake, 17 years of age, chose his uncle Stephen Blake of Middletown to be his guardian.

The will of Elizabeth Johnson Blake was taken March 23, 1736, by Daniel Hall and Stephen Blake. The Will was dated February 4, 1736. It is quite touching to read:

I, Elizabeth Blake, widow relict of John Blake the 2nd, late of Middletown, do make my last will and testament as follows: What right I have in lands in Woodstock shall be equally divided among my foure sons, viz., Richard, John, Joseph and Freelove. And that my moveable estate shall be equally divided among my fower sons, except one pair of steers 3 years old next spring, which steers I give to my son Freelove besides his equal quarter-part of all my estate whatsoever. I also give unto my son Freelove that gun which I bought with my own money. The reason why I give the above particulars to my son Freelove is because he hath taken care of me and my creatures and wrought for a great part of them. It is my will that what right I have in lands descending to me in right of my father shall be equally divided amongst my four sons. I give to Mary Bevin, who liveth with me, one cow. I appoint my son Richard sole executor.

December 16, 1724- Mercy Blake dies at the age of 51 in Middletown, Middlesex, Connecticut. Mercy was born at Middletown in 1673. She married Samuel Roberts in 1691. One day after the death of Mercy Blake Roberts, on December 17, 1724, her son Samuel Roberts died at the age of 32 in Middletown. Once again, I wonder if these deaths can be attributed to the smallpox epidemic that was raging in the area at the time.

(John Blake is my seventh great granduncle. Mercy Blake is John's sister, therefore my seventh great grandaunt. Jonathan and Stephen Blake are their brothers. Our common ancestor is Sarah Hall.)
