August 17, 1742- William Brent dies at the age of 32 in Acquia, Richland, Stafford, Virginia.
William was the son of William Brent and Sarah Gibbons, who later married Alexander Scott of Dipple.
Born in England, he was brought to Virginia in 1717 by his mother.
William was heir to his father's estates in Virginia and England.
William's death notice, quoted by C.H. Brent from "Overwharton Parish Register" of Stafford Co, VA, lists his residence as "Aquia", while records of the birth of his children list his residence as "Richland".
The 1742 Quit Rent Rolls charged William Brent's executors for 7,452 acres.

In Name of God Amen I WILLIAM BRENT of Stafford County being Sick but of sound memory doe make this my Last Will and Testament .. First. I bequeath my Soul to God .. I bequeath my body to the Earth .. Imprimis I will that all my Just debts be truly and justly paid.
Item I give to my son and heir WILLIAM BRENT and heirs all my Lands that descends to me inTail by my grandfather's will.
Item I give to my son GILES BRENT and his heirs all my Real and Personal Estate.
Item My will is that my Executors hereafter mentioned doe Petition the Assembly of Maryland, to Dock the Intail of my Land called Kent fort manner in Maryland, for the advancement of Giles Brent my younger son and his heirs forever. I having involved my Estate with Law Suits in Recovering the said Kent fort manner, and other intailed lands in Virginia that am not able to Provide for my said Son otherwise.

1728- Jonathan Potts is born to David Potts & Elizabeth Jane Lane in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He would move to Virginia with his parents.

James Lewis is born to James Lewis & Sarah Potts in Pottsgrove, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

About 1728 Thomas Penn appears to have been engaged in business of some sort in London, and to have had a partner. He writes to his brother John Penn, April 26 of that year, and signs the letter " Thomas Penn and Company;" in it he speaks of " my business on partnership, of which I some time since acquainted thee."

May 1709, England

May 12, 1709- William Brent and Sarah Gibbons are married in London, England. William, the grandson of Giles Brent, had been born in Stafford County, Virginia. He fell heir, by the deaths of relatives, to the estates of Stoke and Cossington, Somersetshire, and went to England in 1708 to recover his inheritance. There he married Sarah, daughter of William Gibbons, and sister of Sir John Gibbons, Member of Parliament for Middlesex. William Brent died in England on December 26, 1709. His widow Sarah came to Virginia in 1717, where she would go on to marry Reverend Alexander Scott.

March 27, 1731- Abraham Isaac Op den Graeff has died in Philadelphia. His tract of 530 acres in "The Dutch Township" along the Perkionen is divided among his surviving children.

May 27, 1731- The "Pennsylvania Gazette," of May 27, 1731, contains the following advertisement:

 "Run away from David Potts, at Socken above the Great Swamp, A Servant Boy named John Williams, about seventeen Years of Age, of swarthy complexion, has black Hair, and two Molds on his Forehead. Had on a brown linsey-woolsey Jacket, Leather Breehes, a pair of Shoe packs, and Stockings footed White. He is supposed to have with him a Big Bay Horse, with a Switch Tail, and a Star in the Forehead, a helf crop and a half penny in the Ear, and branded on the near Shoulder I P with a Dagger, over it. Whoever secures him and gives notice to George Shoemaker, Innkeeper, in Philadelphia, so that his Master may have him again, shall have Forty Shillings Reward, and Reasonable Charges paid, by DAVID POTTS."

The brand I P may have been the initials of Jonas Potts, who probably contributed to his son's start in life.

The Great Swamp was a marshy tract of land in the upper end of Bucks County, including the village of Quakertown. Saucon is the name of a creek emptying from the south-west into the Lehigh River, a few miles below Bethlehem. Before the year 1730, some Philadelphia speculators bought up large tracts of the rich lands in the Saucon valley and sold it out in smaller parcels.

1734 Virginia

1734- Quakers arrive in Loudoun County, Virginia, settling to the southward. This untamed wilderness was settled from two directions. From Virginia's Tidewater came farm managers, slaves, and indentured servants working for the aristocracy. They came to develop tobacco farms in the piedmont plain of Eastern Loudoun. From the Shenandoah Valley and from Pennsylvania came the Quakers, Germans, and Scots-Irish who wished to start small farms. They chose the west, near the mountains, in the Loudoun and Catoctin Valleys where the soil was good and the climate congenial. They also chose to grow their wheat without the help of slave labor.

REV. GEORGE WHITEFIELD To the Inhabitants of Maryland, Virginia, North and South-Carolina,  Concerning their Negroes.

I must inform you in the meekness and Gentleness of Christ that I think God has a Quarrel with you for your Abuse of and Cruelty to the poor Negroes. Whether it be lawful for Christians to buy Slaves, and thereby encourage the Nations from whom they are bought to be at perpetual War with each other, I shall not take upon me to determine. Sure I am it is sinful, when bought, to use them as bad, nay worse, than as though they were Brutes, and whatever particular Exceptions there may be (as I would charitably hope there are some) I fear the Generality of you that own Negroes are liable to such a Charge; for your Slaves, I believe, work as hard if not harder than the Horses whereon you ride. . . .

 . . [God] does not reject the Prayer of the poor and destitute, nor disregard the Cry of the meanest Negroes! The Blood of them spilt for these many Years in your respective Provinces will ascend up to Heaven against you. I wish I could say it would speak better Things than the Blood of Abel. But this is not all ⎯ Enslaving or misusing their Bodies would, comparatively speaking, be an inconsiderable Evil, was proper Care taken of their Souls. But I have great reason to believe that most of you, on Purpose, keep your Negroes ignorant of Christianity; or otherwise, why are they permitted thro’ your provinces openly to profane the Lord’s Day by their Dancing, Piping and such like? I know the general Pretense for this Neglect of their Souls is That teaching them Christianity would make them proud, and consequently unwilling to submit to Slavery: But what a dreadful Reflection is this in your Holy Religion? What blasphemous Notions must those that make such an Objection have of the Precepts of Christianity? . .

But I challenge the whole World to produce a single Instance of a Negro’s being made a thorough Christian, and thereby made a worse Servant. It cannot be. ⎯ But farther, if teaching Slaves Christianity has such a bad Influence upon their Lives, why are you generally desirous of having your Children taught? Think you they are any way better by Nature than the poor Negroes? No, in no wise. Blacks are just as much, and no more, conceived and born in Sin, as White Men are. Both, if born and bred up here, I am persuaded, are naturally capable of the same Improvement. ⎯ And as for the grown Negroes, I am apt to think, whenever the Gospel is preach’d with Power amongst them, that many will be brought effectually home to God.

January 8, 1743- Ezekial Potts is born to David Potts and Ann Roberts in Germantown, Pennsylvania. He would serve as a private in the 5th Virginia Regiment in 1776.
