July 16, 1743- A son, Richard, is born to George Sisson & Drucilla Cole in Warren, Bristol County, Rhode Island.

July 27, 1743- A son, Isaac, is born to Isaac Tripp & Susannah Spencer in East Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island.

Sisson Name Meaning

The name of Sisson is probably derived from Soissons, a province of France. Doubtless the progenitors of the English descendants of the name came to Britain with William of Normandy.

In the Poll-tax Returns of Howdenshire, (Yorkshire), for the year 1379 the following names are found: Johannes Sisson, Robertus Cisson, Henricus Sisson, Thomas Cysson, and William Cisson.

Canon Bardsley in his "Dictionary of English & Welsh Surnames" states: "Sisson, 'the son of Cecelia' " An English genealogist concludes that in one instance the name is derived from Syston, a populous village in Leicestershire.

The first record, yet found, of the name in the United States is at Portsmouth, Rhode Island. On
May 17, 1653 Richard Sisson was admitted a freeman of the town. (Richard Sisson is my tenth great grandfather.)

December 1742, Rhode Island

A case of rape is brought before the Rhode Island court. The incident allegedly happened on December 23, 1742, when a 39 year-old woman, Comfort Dennis Taylor, traveled between Portsmouth and Bristol on a ferry navigated by a slave named Cuff.
Taylor knew how a woman who had been raped should act, and she comported herself accordingly: she screamed for help in order to demonstrate that she had resisted her attacker; she quickly reported the attack; and she had bruises to show from her ordeal.
In Rhode Island (but not elsewhere in New England) courts could rely on circumstantial evidence if there were no eyewitnesses. A second example concerns Rhode Island's laws about rape. Colonies did not have laws about attempted rape, so Taylor's accusation of Cuff fell into a grey area. But in the midst of her legal struggles to get redress in any forum, the Rhode Island General Assembly passed a law in August 1743 that pertained to attempted rape by a black man. The law made attempted rape by a black man punishable by branding, whipping, and transportation. This law, and others like it in colonial America, racialized laws about attempted rape by assuming that any advance by a black man toward a white woman would be unwanted, and thus the man was automatically guilty of rape

 Joseph Brownell marries Rebecca Tripp, daughter of Abiel Tripp & Elinor Waite, and George Sisson, son of James Sisson & Deborah Cook, marries Abigail Cook in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.

February 1741- Joseph Babcock dies at the age of 60 in Westerly, Kings County, Rhode Island.
Joseph was born in 1681 to John Babcock and Mary Lawton.
In 1704, he married Rebecca Stanton.

February 13, 1741- Elizabeth Tripp, wife of William Wood, dies at the age of 53 in Newport County, Rhode Island.
Born in Portsmouth on November 21, 1687, Elizabeth was the daughter of James Tripp and Mercy Lawton.
In 1708, when she was 21, she first married Richard Mitchell of Great Britain. He died in 1722. In April of 1734, she married William Wood.

February 23, 1738- Ishmael Tripp is born to Benoni Tripp & Elizabeth Mosher in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.

August 22, 1736- Anne Tripp dies at the age of 57 in Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island.
Anne Tripp was born in 1679 to Peleg Tripp & Anne Sisson.
She married Thomas Rodgers. I have the same date of death for both Thomas and Ann.
During that year, 1736, Jonathan Gilbert deeded two tracts at Deep Creek Bridge in Bertie County, North Carolina, adjacent to Robert Rogers, to their son, Job Rogers. Bertie County, NC Deed Book D, page 298.

August 23, 1736- Amie Lawton is born to Job Lawton & Mary Cory in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island.

June 30, 1729- Deliverance Smith and his wife, Mary Tripp, die in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. Mary is age 51, and her husband is 62. They are interred at the old homestead Hill Meadow burial place.
Most sources have them dying on the same day, though Mary's death is also given as August 19, 1729.
Deliverance's will (below) mentions wife Mary, but in September, it was executed by his son, Humphrey.
Mary Tripp was the daughter of Peleg Tripp & Anne Sisson.

1725- Joseph Macomber and Mary Tripp have married in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts. The date of marriage is uncertain, but their first child, Sarah, would be born on March 2nd. They would go on to have seven children.
