The Worland Family in America and Beyond

I began my life in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, on an island filled with forests and wild rhododendrons. I was separated from my Worland family there at an early age. Recently, I was reunited with my family and learned of my heritage. And so, this journey to know my ancestors began. The Worlands, Gideons, Newtons, Conards... they were the colonists, the settlers, the pioneers. They fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War. September 1725, Pennsylvania

September, 1725- Joseph Ambler is born to Joseph Ambler & Ann Williams in Montgomeryville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

September 14, 1725- Agnes Tunis is born to Anthony (Tunis) Dennis & Mary Williams in Pennsylvania.

(Joseph Ambler and Agnes Tunis are my second cousins 7 times removed. They are first cousins as their mothers are sisters. Our common ancestors are Aret Klincken & Niske Agnes Jensen.)

May 1723, Pennsylvania

May 1, 1723- Joseph Ambler, husband of Ann Williams, purchases a tract of 90 acres of land from William Morgan in Montgomeryville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

May 2, 1723- Gerhard DeHaven and wife Mary Sellen, along with his brother Herman DeHaven and wife Anneken Op den Graeff conveyed 200 acres at the upper end of their 440 acre tract in Germantown to Peter Jansen, May 2, 1723.

A daughter, Elizabeth DeHaven, was born to Herman & Anneken on May 6, 1723 in Skippack, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Herman DeHaven and his family then moved to New Providence, where he was living in 1734 on a 200 acre tract. He built a saw mill and grist mill. He also kept an ordinary or inn. He was granted a license for the inn in 1734.

May 26, 1723- Mary Cleaver is born to Peter Cleaver, Jr. & Elizabeth Potts in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.

(Ann Williams is my first cousin 8 times removed. Our common ancestors are Aret Klincken & Niske Agnes Jensen.

Anneken Op den Graeff is my second cousin 8 times removed. Her daughter, Elizabeth DeHaven, is my third cousin 8 times removed. Our common ancestors are Hermann Op den Graeff & Gretjen Driessen Pletjes and Pieter Dohrs & Lysgen Grietes.

Mary Cleaver is my first cousin 7 times removed. Our common ancestors is Jonas Potts.)

August 7, 1720- Jonathan Cox is born to Richard Cox & Margaret Potts in Kennet Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Joseph Ambler and Ann Williams are married at the Merion Friends Meeting House in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

From our Monthly Meeting held at Gwynedd, the 20th day of ye Sixth month, 1720:
To the Monthly Meeting of Haverford, Greeting. Whereas the bearer hereof Joseph Ambler signified to us his intentions of Marriage with Ann Williams, one belonging to your meeting, requesting a few lines from us, now these may certify that a due enquiry hath been made, and we do not find while he lived amongst us, but his conversation have been sober and orderly, and as far as we know it he is clear from all other woman upon ye acct of marriage, so desireing his prosperity we remain your friends and brethren in the Truch.

Joseph Ambler Inn

The land on which the Joseph Ambler Inn now stands was originally part of a large expanse owned by William Penn. In 1682, William Penn granted 1,000 acres to Richard Pearce. In 1711, 50 acres were sold to William Morgan. Morgan built the original section of the Farmhouse, which consisted of a ground floor where meals were prepared, and a small upstairs sleeping chamber. When Morgan died, the property was sold to Joseph Ambler.

The house remained in the Ambler family until 1825 when the property was acquired by squire John Roberts who married an Ambler daughter. It was Roberts who built the middle section of the farmhouse, adding the living room and dining room.

Over the next 100 years, the property had many owners. In 1929, under the ownership of the Wright family, the "schoolroom" was constructed. It was in this room that the children of the house were schooled. The property passed from the Wrights, to the Flood's, to the Wolfe's, and finally in 1983, the remaining 12 acres were sold to Richard Allman, the present day owner. It was Allman who put the property to use as a small bed and breakfast.
