The Worland Family in America and Beyond

I began my life in the Puget Sound area of Washington State, on an island filled with forests and wild rhododendrons. I was separated from my Worland family there at an early age. Recently, I was reunited with my family and learned of my heritage. And so, this journey to know my ancestors began. The Worlands, Gideons, Newtons, Conards... they were the colonists, the settlers, the pioneers. They fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, the Civil War. July 1742, Rhode Island

July 27th, 1742- Revolutionary War hero, Nathanael Greene, is born born on Forge Farm at Potowomut in the township of Warwick, Rhode Island. He would become General George Washington's most trusted General.  The Marquis de Lafayette proclaimed of him "..in the very name of Greene are remembered all the virtues and talents which illustrate the patriot, the statesman, and the military leader..." The only men to have served all eight years of the Revolution at the rank of General were George Washington and Nathanael Greene.

July 29, 1742- Susanna, daughter of William Cornell & Hannah Thurston, dies at Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island.
Her uncle, Gideon Cornell, is serving as assistant to the Governor and as a Justice of the Court.

(Gideon Cornell is my third cousin 9 times removed. His niece, Susanna Cornell, is my fourth cousin 8 times removed. Our common ancestors are George Lawton & Isbell Smith.)

November 30, 1740- Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island. Thomas Sherman marries his third wife, Anne Sisson.  "Shearman, Thomas, (3d. m.), and Ann Sisson; m. by Gideon Cornell, Asst., Nov. 30, 1740."
Anne is the younger sister of his first wife, Sarah Sisson.  Thomas and Anne will name their first child Sarah.

(Anne Sisson is my first cousin 9 times removed. Our common ancestors are George Sisson & Sarah Lawton. Thomas Sherman is her second cousin.

May 16, 1740- Dorcas Tew dies at the age of 30 in Newport, Rhode Island. The woman was mentally handicapped, and had been provided for at the death of her father, William, in 1718.

"Rcpt. by Caleb Arnold of Newport and Sarah Arnold Lately Named Sarah Tew, for legacy from Est. of her father William Tew of Tiv., as paid by Richard Tew, George Sisson & William Sanford, Execs, dtd. at Newport 7 March 1732/3. Also incl. 'all Satisfaction for the personal Estate of Abigail Tew widdow of the said Wllm Tew,' excepting for that portion reserved to support Dorcas Tew, dau. of said William Tew and an idiot [7:591]."

May 17, 1740- Elizabeth Cornell is born to William Cornell & Hannah Thurston in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.

(Dorcas Tew is my first cousin 9 times removed. Our common ancestors are George Sisson & Sarah Lawton. Elizabeth Cornell is her third cousin once removed.

September 1736, Rhode Island

September 7, 1736- Ruth Fish is born to Preserved Fish & Elizabeth Slocum in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island. She would not survive, dying at age three.

September 10, 1736- Sarah Cornell is born to William Cornell & Hannah Thurston in Portsmouth, Newport County, Rhode Island.

(Ruth Fish is my third cousin 8 times removed. Our common ancestors are Thomas Lawton & Elizabeth Salisbury.
Sarah Cornell is my fourth cousin 8 times removed. Ruth Fish is her fourth cousin. Our common ancestors are George Lawton & Isabell Smith.)

RESIDED IN DARTSMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS, A YEOMAN AND MERCHANT AND THERE DIED, HE IN JANUARY, 1739. THEY HAD EIGHT CHILDREN: 1.JOHN. 2.DAVID. 3.MARY. 4.ELEAZER. 5.ELEPHEL. 6.HUMPHREY. 7.ANN. 8.DEBORAH.

March 6, 1732- Anne Slocum is born to Eleazer Slocum & Deborah Smith in Dartmouth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.
